The Rise of Diary-Format Fiction: Why Readers Can’t Put Down Journal-Style Stories

There’s something about opening a book and finding it written like a secret you weren’t supposed to read  a diary entry, a scrawled note, a confession meant for no one but the page. Diary-format fiction has quietly become one of the most beloved storytelling styles in fantasy and middle-grade adventure, and it’s exactly the format I chose for The Trail Diaries.

In this post, I’m exploring why journal-style narration is resonating so strongly with readers right now, what makes it such a powerful storytelling tool, and why intimacy  not plot twists  might be the real reason we can’t put these books down.

    What Makes Diary-Format Fiction Different

Unlike traditional third-person narration, diary-format stories put readers directly inside a character’s private thoughts, written as if for no audience but themselves. There’s no narrator smoothing things over — just raw, immediate, sometimes messy first-person reflection.

This format often includes dated entries, asides, doodled thoughts, or half-finished sentences that mimic how we actually journal: emotional, non-linear, and honest. That rawness is exactly what makes it feel different from a polished narrative arc.

The biggest draw is intimacy. When a character writes only for themselves, readers feel like they’re witnessing something unfiltered  fear, doubt, and wonder recorded in real time, before the character has had a chance to make sense of it. That unpolished honesty builds trust between reader and character faster than almost any other technique

The Craft Challenges Behind the Format

Writing a diary-style novel is deceptively difficult. Authors have to balance:

    • Believability — an entry must sound like something a person would actually write, not a narrator performing for readers
    • Plot clarity — since the character doesn’t know they’re in a story, pacing and stakes have to be revealed indirectly, through what they notice or omit
    • Voice consistency — the diary’s tone has to evolve naturally as the character grows, without ever breaking believability
    • Structure — deciding how entries are dated, how time gaps are handled, and when silence (missing entries) says more than words

Done well, these constraints are exactly what make the format feel so alive.

Diary-format fiction endures because it offers something increasingly rare: genuine intimacy with a character’s inner world, without a narrator standing between you and them. If you’re a reader who loves feeling like a story’s confidant rather than its audience, this format was made for you.

If this resonates, I’d love for you to spend some time with The Trail Diaries  written the way I hope every good journal feels: honest, incomplete, and true.

Why Eco-Fantasy Is the Genre Everyone’s Talking About in 2026

    Finding Inspiration Through Everyday

If you’ve scrolled through a bookstore’s “New & Notable” shelf lately, you may have noticed a pattern: forests with secrets, rivers that remember, and heroes who save the world not with swords alone, but by listening to the land. Welcome to eco-fantasy  one of the fastest-growing corners of fiction right now, and a genre close to my own heart as the author of The Trail Diaries.

In this post, I want to unpack why eco-fantasy is having such a moment, what makes it different from traditional fantasy, and why I think it’s exactly the kind of story we need at this point in time. Whether you’re a longtime fantasy reader or just nature-curious, by the end of this you’ll understand the appeal  and hopefully find your next favorite read.

    What Exactly Is Eco-Fantasy?

Eco-fantasy blends the magic and world-building of traditional fantasy with a central, active role for nature — not as scenery, but as a force with agency, memory, and consequence. Forests aren’t just backdrops; they’re allies, adversaries, and sometimes the story’s true protagonist.

Where classic fantasy often centers kingdoms, prophecies, and chosen ones, eco-fantasy tends to ask a different question: what happens when the natural world fights back, heals, or simply refuses to be ignored? Spirits tied to rivers, guardians of ancient trails, and creatures that exist only where ecosystems remain intact are common threads.
